“The use of that last phrase, “style over substance” has always been, as Oscar Wilde observed, a marvellous and instant indicator of a fool. For those who perceive a separation between the two have either not lived, thought, read or experienced the world with any degree of insight, imagination or connective intelligence.” — Stephen Fry on Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs 1955 - 2011

When I was a kid in the late 80’s my mum worked as a secretary at ANU Laser Physics, and on the weekends she would often bring home a Macintosh Plus (or possibly one of those other all-in-one biege/grey boxes) to catch up on her work.

My brother and I would invariably end up playing games on it all weekend - Dark Castle, Enchanted Scepters, Lode Runner, Shufflepuck Café - fun times. I’d also crack open mac paint and bring up the trusty brick background pattern and spray-paint brush and paint my name, ‘Liam’s Room’ and other stupid kid things and then print them all out and tape them to my bedroom door and walls.

I loved it. Our previous computer was a Microbee with a tape drive. This was light years ahead.

I never really knew who Steve was until the early 2000’s when I first bought a mac with my own money. I’ve been a fan ever since.

But it only just hit me today what a profound effect he’s had on my life, and how much influence he’s had on what I do for a living (and how I do it), what I do in my spare time and on me as a human being.

Anyway, the laborious point I’m trying to get to is: He made a difference in my life and I’ll miss him.

I’ll leave you with these quotes from Steve:

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.”“Stay hungry, stay foolish.”

From Steve’s 2005 Stanford Commencement Address. Watch it if you haven’t yet, it’s especially poignant today.
